The Art Director’s Club is a great organization with lots of info and opportunities for design and illustration. There’s plenty to do there, and students get a discounted membership.

I was lucky enough to be chosen as the recipient of the ADC Global 2008 Illustration Scholarship, and they interviewed each of the winners. My stuff is completely different than last year’s winner, so the letter came as a huge surprise! If you’re an illustrator, designer, or photographer in college, definitely enter for 2009. There is a winner for each area of design and $2,500 off your tuition is nothing to sneeze at!

So I got my first rejection today, from my favorite childhood magazine Highlights for Children. I’m not too depressed about it; actually I was pretty excited to receive any sort of response at all! Here’s the delightfully succinct letter:

“Dear Jade:

Thank you for your Hidden Pictures submission, “Lemurs.”

I am returning this illustration to you. The editors felt that it does not meet the needs of our publication.

Thanks for your interest in Highlights for Children.”

So heartfelt! Perhaps instead of lemurs stuffing their faces I should next try Happy Children biking with Helmets. Hmm….
